We drove north to the Kohala coast to visit with a friend of Joan and Mickey's from Portland who spends several months a year here in Hawaii. Her name is Giselle and her partner is Jesse. They were the most gracious hosts and took us to the site of the historic Bond Girls' School and on a trail that goes through the forests on the land. This was a missionary school for the girls on the island that they are refurbishing; also they are re-establishing some native style gardens that include taro.
We also went to the end of the road to Pololu Lookout. There was a lot of vog (volcanic fog with sulphur dioxide from the the other side of the island) so it's hard to see these beautiful gorges that are cut into the coastline.
Than back to Kapa'au for lunch. The women went to the deli for a wonderful curried quinoa salad topped with a cinnamon role. We were joined by a very assertive couple of geckoes who were after the cinnamon role.
The guys went to Minnie's for pulled pork. Spent an absolutely mind boggling 2.5 hours getting back in nearly standstill traffic down the west side of the island. Ugh. Saw lots of lush foliage and beautiful flowers today.
